Jamaica, VA-On the final night of the 2017 season Jacob Hawkins of Fairmont, WV would earn his first career SEDMS win while Billy Workman Jr would clinch his first SEDMS Championship at Virginia Motor Speedway.
27 Modifieds would sign in for the final event of the season. In PFC Brakes pole qualifying Jacob Hawkins would blister the stopwatch with an 18.820 second lap. Earning his first career PFC Brakes pole award.
In Prime Electrical Solutions heat race number 1 quick qualifier Jacob Hawkins would lead early with Austin Holcomb close behind. Hawkins would hold off the challenge and earn the win over David Taylor.
In Westview Lanes heat race number 2 Chris Arnold would have to hold off a hard charging Buck Stevens to take the win.
In JRS Competition Finishes heat race number 3 Joey Polevoy would out-duel Ryan Ayers to earn the win.
In the main event it would be Hawkins and Stevens leading the field to the green. Hawkins would take the early advantage with Chris Arnold tightly behind in second. Early on cautions and cars spinning would keep Hawkins up front and stall the progress of Arnold. As cautions and restarts continued to pile up Hawkins won restart after restart and kept the field behind him. Multiple drivers would come from the back to the front after flat tires including Workman and Ayers. Down the stretch Ayers and Arnold would battle for second but no one would catch Hawkins as he would lead all 30 laps en route to the win. Arnold would sneak by Ayers at the line to claim the runner up spot with Ayers rounding out the top 3.
As Hawkins celebrated the win Workman would celebrate his championship after a hard fought 7th place finish.
With that the 2017 season is complete for the Southeast Dirt Modified Series. On behalf of all the series staff, sponsors, drivers and tracks we say thank you to the fans who came out to watch our Modifieds race this season.
